fake research

Hi! I'm new. :D Umm.. been here a little while, but was sort of contemplating this thought that I will now present to you. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who does this, but I feel like I did make it up. That may be sort of conceited of me, but I haven't seen many others do this.

Well, umm... the idea is, like, fake research. Yeah. It's the idea that, if the information provided is faux (being that it's not been released by the creator), but it seems valid, then it's "official" information. Take, for example, the statistics of these vehicles from Final Fantasy 8. Believe it or not, they were made up by a German fansite, and have been translated numerous times (I mean, it even says "These statistics are not official and were created by so-and-so!" on their site). But a lot of people are considering it to be "official" information, because, first, there isn't any official information, and second, it's believable.

I've exercised this idea in my quarter-finished creation, shinra_library. For example, the ShinRa HQ layout article has been used on other sites (well, only two ^^;), though I've made it up. It seems like official hoohaw, but even though it isn't, people still consider it good information. There's also this Before Crisis website that has standard-issue ShinRa weaponry, and it looks great, albeit made up.

Uhh... yeah, I pretty much reiterated the same idea a bunch of times. Sorry. ^_^ But my purpose was to share this and see if it is something that is frowned upon or otherwise is not liked (being unofficial and all). So... yeah. Thanks for reading this. ♥

Sounds like something similar to fanon. Not exactly the same, but the same concept. I wouldn't really have a problem with it being widely accepted as the common or near-canon as long as people disclaimer that it's not actually official information. Because misinformation is no fun, and I'd want there to be room for people to make up different statistics if they wished, without others jumping on them and claiming that information is wrong, y'know? The same way some people accept fanon as canon and then tell those who don't adhere to that fanon that they're wrong.

So actually, I guess I do kind of disagree with it being considered actual official information. I suppose I'd rather it be considered the same as fanon, officially unofficial canon. If that made sense.

I'm done making an idiot of myself now :D

I love that sort of stuff (because I'm a huge dork) but I can sort of see where korekara is coming from; it really is annoying when people take fanon for canon. However, it's not your fault if people choose to be stupid, so as long as you have a note that it's unofficial info, I think you're fine.

While that is an interesting topic and may prove valuable dicussing.. This isn't exactly the place to do it.
Reason: We're about symbolism and myth involved in video games, not canon vs fanon.

By the way, those "made up" weapons on Gunshot Romance? If you're referring to these: http://www.freewebs.com/gunshotromance/weapons.htm they are not made up. That whole site has things translated from BC.

This is a bit late.. but I have to say that I love your shinra_library - I'm a huge Shinra fan so I love reading when you update it.

Although it is unofficial - I really enjoy reading about the different aspects of Shinra. I think for me - it's what I wish the creators would write about and make canon - but they don't so I'm happy for a fan to write it and I'll accept that - if it makes sense to me that is and your fanon does. Thanks for writing the shinra_library! XD
